Cooperation workshop, 20-21st March 2010

Dear Cooperation participants,

We are Tom, Simon and Julie, otherwise St. Pierre and Miquelon and we will be running the workshop this weekend. We just want to briefly introduce what we will be doing and ask you to think a bit about it beforehand:

In 2009 St. Pierre & Miquelon produced the report 'A Dilemma: An Enquiry into Steve Hater's Arabic Tattoo' [ http://www.st-pierre-and-miquelon.com/a-dilemma.html ]. As a result of this, we have set up an Enquiry Service [ http://www.st-pierre-and-miquelon.com/enquiry-service.html ] aimed at individuals who would like us to conduct an investigation or research into a personal concern of theirs.

For the workshop this weekend we will be running this Enquiry Service with you. We would like for you all to bring with you an 'enquiry' that could be the subject of investigation by the group. For instance, is there something in your local environment, school, culture, personal history etc that seems problematic to you?

Through discussion we will choose one of the enquiries. We will then work out how we will conduct the enquiry. We can use conventional methods such as the internet, first hand observation, questionnaires etc but we will also look at our skills as individuals and how they might contribute to the group.

Thanks and look forward to seeing you Saturday

Julie, Simon and Tom

Objectif Exhibitions presents:
Michael Stevenson “A Question of How Things Behave”

January 30 to March 20, 2010
Opening Saturday January 30, 6 to 8pm

New Zealand artist Michael Stevenson brings together a range of different media often comprising seemingly documentary installations that take an anthropological look at historical events (frequently related to the world of art). In his works, Stevenson presents a web of information whose ambiguous status as fact or fiction is rendered even more precarious as it appears to be the product of a mind shrouded in conspiracy theories and innuendo. The objects presented exude an aura of monumentality, re-enforcing their status as historically significant if undervalued. For his first solo exhibition in Belgium, Stevenson presents a new video produced by Objectif Exhibitions, Etablissment d’en Face and the Auckland Triennial looking at the theme of uncertainty by way of the story of Manfred Gnädinger aka Man (1940-2002), along with a presentation of Man's library from the Museo del Alemán, Camelle, Spain.

Michael Stevenson’s shows in 2008 include “Lender of Last Resort”, Vilma
Gold, Frieze Art Fair (London), “The Sweet Burnt Smell of History”, Panama Art Biennial 8 (Panama City), “Not Quite How I Remember It”, The Power Plant (Toronto), “Master Humphrey’s Clock”, a project by de Appel curatorial programme (Utrecht), “Lender of Last Resort”, Kröller-Müller Museum (Otterlo), and in 2007: “Persepolis 2530”, Arnolfini (Bristol), “Wiedereröffnung des Museum Abteiberg”, Städtisches Museum Abteiberg (Mönchengladbach), “The Irresistible Force”, Tate Modern (London), “c/o the Central Bank of Guatemala”, CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts (San Francisco). In 2003, Stevenson represented New Zealand at the 50th Venice Biennale with his installation “This is the Trekka”. Since 2000, Stevenson lives and works in Berlin. Attached image: Detail of a dictionary cover collage by Manfred Gnädinger aka Man (1940-2002). The book is from a library found in Gnädinger’s small dwelling situated on the beach in the Galician fishing village of Camelle. Tasca / What future?

Tasca:

In portugal there are some traditional bars being closed down due to European Standardization laws. This bars are called Tasca's (from the original word Taverna), and they used to exist in a very regular way, for one could fine it in almost every corner of any city in Portugal. Now its existence is threatned becouse EU claims for its unsafety, or for the new standard sizes that are norms to be taken in consideration in its every country.

I am talking about places were people joined in to eat and drink cheaply, to talk, discuss and a laugh about the quotidian.
For example in Coimbra there were more than 100 hundred Tasca's about 10 years ago. Now only 20 are still operating.
In Braga a 100 year old café was closed becouse it had a wooden roof.

Well this hole situation gets to be even more evident when we justapose an economical crisis (having its peak in 2005 when ASAE - Autoridade de Segurança Alimentar e Económica was created), with the beginning of this activities.
Its the imposed social/visual formating that I would like to talk with you all.

I proposethat we meet for drinks in traditional bars, discussing the "Where we are going to?" and the "How to cope with it?".

Remember Dennis Brutus (1924-2009)

There will come a time
There will come a time we believe
When the shape of the planet
and the divisions of the land

Will be less important;
We will be caught in a glow of friendship
a red star of hope
will illuminate our lives
A star of hope
A star of joy
A star of freedom

Dennis Brutus

"When the shape of the planet (different academies), and the divisions of the land (different ateliers, everyone in his own atelier, in his own academie) will be less important, we will be caught in a glow of friendship (cooperation)." (my interpretation)

The experience of the meetings together really moved me. It's so interesting to talk about art, to see work of other people, sharing thoughts...

Merry Christmass to y'all, may your wishes come true!

Monday, December 21, 2009

In the first place I was thinking that we can do something with the space that occurs between the people of cooperation. A space that exists, but is not visible. But we could make it visible in real time or in the minds of other people. Just think about the idea.

I find the idea of "Invite people from different schools and different cities" also very interesting and maybe we can bind the idea op the invisible space of cooperation on the idea to make from cooperation something more then what occurs between us. I feel a need to know what other peoples are doing in other schools, maybe they make art in the same subject as me. I have myself a few ideas: to organize an "open deur" (open the doors of the school) where people of the school talk and show there work on the interested students of other schools (maybe this idea is only possible and interesting for the masters), other ideas are to organize a procession of art or to do an action at different places at the same time, etc.

I wish I could share this experience with more people. The expierence of meeting people from different countries, from different cities, from different institutions and who are all working with and thinking about 'art'. I liked the idea of an open forum.

Invite people from different schools and different cities just for one afternoon,evening,... and let them get to know each other and each others work, how they think about art, education,...Without the pressure of the name 'project' or 'three months',... How can we make this interesting? Can this be an end result? Can this idea (without making it concrete) bring us any other idea?

There is an artist , i cannot come up with his name right now , but his art exists mostly out of inviting people and cooking for them.

Can we make the expierence of meeting and working together visual? Like in a piece of art? A dance piece, music, theatre, performance, a manifest,...

Thank you for making this possible, for meeting, for talking, for thinking together!

The first work

I am so pity I could not come yesterday.I think the reading and explan text for project is more interesting.I really like this kind of felling for someone
together for talking ,meeting and creating.
Art need communication , the dialogue of group is very interesting and advantage. So I hope next time I can come and rejoin your. But I also think a lot of
things.I always to think when I life I need to do something, even I have a lot of idea are impossible. However I had do them. I want to do.I can do what I
like. For art,it is possible forever, today is, tomorrow also.Because long time ago more impossible things changed,They are possible.Past people believe,
we also believe.Education is teach and study, but art is do.It is to say.It is a language,It is a performence.we just want to find a form for explan ourself.
It is a way for show other self. The different space, different people, different feeling, you can see, you can use your eye, they do not to talking, they sing.
they move, they drawing, they painting on the wall, they go to the outside, they laugh, they shout very loudly, they throw the ston on the canvas. They are
different, but they also same.Maybe they are not themself.only they do themself. They try to do change some impossible things,They tell us the different
become same. They are not to do for art. They are seeking themself and do themself,The different just is explan form and role.
In life we need to play different roles, which is a need also a kind of instinct. Each in a different role can produce only for a different person or in a
different state , so it is always only one role, which differ from their true selves, and how far it? Do not know. But you are you, like in this world there
is only one Picasso, only one I like. The reason why a master is called a master because they are the first person for this form and style who have their first
piece of work belongs to the public also is theirself. The reason I can not be more than them because we are not that first person, which can not be under the
same conditions again become possible,
we do not need to do any comparison, our own is itself a miracle, is can not beyond the individual, and every time we work can be said to be the first works,
we only need self-transcendence in creative processcan Is impossible to become possible, and perhaps they can also become impossible. I am not like you, and
less likely than you, and you will also not be possible and you have different than me.
Art is a game, is a strange and interesting dreams, where we can do what we like to do, and do not think about anything because it is only a dream is a
stage, others believe that fiction is so for us it's true.

(Only an Attitude of Orientation)

In advance of our day together on Friday, here's some reading material: http://www.dextersinister.org/library.html?id=222

Basically, it's the second of three texts which attempt to reconsider what a relevant art/design education might look like in the imminent and foreseeable future. I think of it as a very cooperative text, not only because there are so many different people's ideas involved, but because it was arrived at very much by talking and working with colleagues and friends. It makes a point of paraphrasing rather than directly quoting, as a kind of proof of absorption.

First, I'm interested to know your thoughts and opinions.

Second, I'd like you to consider and bring along a possible addition to the text, i.e. a source, an idea, which might be an old or contemporary text (or, I suppose, image) to compliment the kinds of attitudes I'm compiling here. And of course you ought to be able to paraphrase – speaking, not writing – your contribution to the rest of the group.

That's it. See you Friday. Looking forward.
This is an action of Jason Mack, a glass artist. I think its beautiful to see that he get people involved into his action by asking them to collect glass. "The more glass the community brings, the bigger the tree gets."

Definitions of Cooperation

Cooperation or co-operation is the process of working or acting together, which can be accomplished by both intentional and non-intentional agents. In its simplest form it involves things working in harmony, side by side, while in its more complicated forms, it can involve something as complex as the inner workings of a human being or even the social patterns of a nation. It is the alternative to working separately in competition.
